EDAX aligns with CSP for developement and marketing of electron beam microcalorimeter technology
(June 2000)

Mahwah, NJ - EDAX Inc. a leading manufacturer of x-ray microanalysis, x-ray fluorescence and electron diffraction instrumentation, announces a joint development and marketing agreement with German-based CSP Cryogenic Spectrometers GmbH for electron beam applications of x-ray microcalorimeter (superconducting) technology.

"The aim of the alliance" explained by Derek Redfern, Product Manager, of Edax, "is to blend CSP's microcalorimeter expertise with Edax's software, production, customer support and marketing strengths. Together, we intend to identify and develop new analytical solutions for the semiconductor industry, in addition to other markets that have ongoing needs for comprehensive materials analysis."

CSP of Ismaning, Germany has developed new high resolution (down to 15 eV), superconducting EDX detectors with cryogen-free, mechanical cooling ideal for industrial applications. Edax will exploit this microcalorimeter technology in the development of next generation semiconductor analysis systems that will offer new and enhanced analytical capabilities Redfern added. As it's first product offering, Edax and CSP expect to introduce the PolarisTM®© microcalorimeter system later in 2000.

CSP Cryogenic Spectrometers GmbH, founded in 1998 as spin-off company of Munich Technical University, develops, manufactures and markets high-resolution cryodetectors and ADR (Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator) cryostats. CSP which is partially underwritten by Bavarian State Government, the Dr. Otto Investment Group and Booz Allen & Hamilton, is a member of the European Microelectronics Development for European Applications (MEDEA)
and the European Semiconductor Equipment Assessment (SEA) programs.

Edax, the acknowledged leader in Energy Dispersive Microanalysis, X-ray Fluorescence and Electron BackScatter Diffraction instrumentation, designs, manufactures, installs and services high quality products and systems for leading companies in semiconductors, metals, geological, biological, material and ceramics market. Since it's founding in 1962, Edax has used it's knowledge and experience in developing ultra sensitive silicon radiation sensors, digital electronics and specialized application software that facilitate solutions to research, development and industrial requirements. Most recently, Edax has been awarded license to microcalorimeter patents of the National Institute of Standards & Technology thereby supporting the ability to provide this technology commercially.
